Why My Heart Belongs to Mark Twain

1. His mustache.

No seriously. Look at this thing! It's ridiculously awesome!

2. Quotes like this:

"Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society."

And this:

"The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them."

3. His ability to comment on various social injustices while still making us laugh.

4. He wrote his autobiography, but insisted that it not be published until he was "dead, unaware and indifferent". He died in 1910. The University of California Press hung onto his complete memoirs all this time and will publish the first volume in November. 100 years later? Yeah. That sounds about right.

LOL! Awesome. I don't think I've read any of his books but I've heard about them so much, I actually thought I had for a moment. Then I realized...nope. His memoirs are going to be fantastic!

100 years!!!! I suppose they've been mining the memoir for nuggets all this time. I'll be excited to read it. That man's mind and wit and courage is what awes me.

I love that quote! And yes, the mustache is pretty awesome. I'm sure the autobiography will be an interesting read.

Pali (can I call you that? :) )-- You've never read Huck Finn???!!! :O Go now. Read it. I'll wait. ;)

Tricia-- Yeah, if I remember right the school makes it available to read (on campus of course...). But for those of us not privileged enough... soon we'll be able to hold our very own copies! :D

Anna-- I'm not much of an autobiography reader... but this one I'll probably have to dip into.

LOL, you can also just call me Hannah. ;) Even though that's just as long, but don't ever abbreiviate that. I don't like it. >:{

I will go ahead and read it. It's not like I don't know the story...it's just never been on my school "reading list". It's one of those classics I'll get to...eventually. *ducks before you can chuck the book at me*

Can't wait to read it! I love him, too. TOM SAWYER helped me through a long, sleepless night. HUCK FINN kept me company while I had strep throat during a trip to Spain.

AND are we sure Mark Twain is truly dead? I think I saw him last week at Sam's Club (my husband insists is was Einstein, but you never know).

Hannah it is!! And I will never, ever, ever shorten it. I would hate to see that scary mean face again. :) Also... in which direction should I chuck this thing? *cocks throwing arm* You should probably duck...because it's a hard cover.

Saumya-- Thanks for stopping by! I'm certainly glad I'm not the only one with an appreciation for Mark Twain... :)

C-- lol... Oh my lordy. Mark Twain... at Sam's Club??? I love everything about that. Also... when did you go to Spain and where? We should chat about this... because apparently this is something else we have in common.

I Love, love Mark Twain!!! Just watched a Ken Burns/PBS documentary about his life which was awesome.

Twain's life was a lot harder than I knew...(he was very bad with money, and hadn't a clue about business.)

But oh what genius. Huck Finn and Jim have stuck with me since I first read them at age 10.

PS. Netflix has the documentary as streaming video right now...check it out.

Thanks for the heads up Alisa!! I will have to check that out!

I love my copy of Huck Finn w/original illustrations and, I think, layout. Was just reading some of it last month.

Steph-- it's the mustache isn't it? :)

Robert-- ooo... that sounds amazing! I don't know if I've ever seen the original illustrations... I'll have to hunt that down!

100 years is a little over kill to wait - but he's still hot so I guess they know what they're doing.
Thanks for pointing this out.

I love Mark Twain's quotes! There are so many great ones! Very cool about his memoirs.

Ezmirelda- Thank you again!

Ann- hehe... in an ancient old man genius sort of way. ;)

Terry- Maybe they wanted to wait an extra long time. You know... just in case? Though a Zombie Mark Twain might be pretty neat.

Dawn- I know. I could very easily spend my entire day reading his words.

I especially like Samuel Clemens' advice to write with simplicity and clarity.

Good choice for a favorite writer!
