Description: Thirty-year-old Zoe leads an ordinary life until the end of the world arrives. She is cleaning cages and floors at Pope Pharmaceuticals when the President of the United States announces that human beings are no longer a viable species. When Zoe realizes that everyone she loves is disappearing, she starts running. Scared and alone in a shockingly changed world, she embarks on a remarkable journey of survival and redemption. Along the way, Zoe comes to see that humanity is defined not by genetic code, but by soulful actions and choices.

My Thoughts:  I won an advanced copy of this book, started reading with high expectations, and devoured all 292 pages in 1 day. Expectations met and exceeded.

Me=Happy Reader.

The narrative alternates between "Then" and "Now", weaving a layered and twisted story about a genetic experiment gone horribly wrong and one woman's determined struggle to piece together her shattered life. What I loved about Zoe, the heroine, was that she was both strong AND sympathetic, which is sometimes hard to find in female protagonists thrust into post-apocalyptic chaos. Often, they are weak and helpless, relying on a strong man for protection, or they are too rough around the edges, too willing to kill, too eager to taste blood. Zoe fights hard and battles her obstacles with ferocity and courage, but still maintains her fragility and complicated humanity.

A strong debut, Adams' prose is terse and cuts to the bone. She's found that delicious balance between literary and commercial, and I, for one, look forward to reading more from her in the future.
